Treating Hair Loss

hair-lossThere are really two different hair loss scenarios that need to be addressed. The first is when a person just starts to notice the extra hairs on his or her pillow in the morning or when the shower drain starts to fill up with a jumbled mass. The second is after the hair loss problem has been active for a while and there are actual bald spots.

During the first phase the best male hair loss treatment is to take some sort of a DHT blocker. DHT is the testosterone metabolite that actually bonds with the patient’s hair follicles and causes them to stop producing hair shaft material. There are two routes to take when looking for a product that reduces the DHT in the body. You can try a natural remedy like saw palmetto or nettle root. Both of these can be found at your nearest health food store or online. The second option is an FDA approved drug called Finasteride. This drug treats high levels of DHT that are responsible for male pattern baldness and also enlarged prostate in men. Finasteride is not prescribed to women due to the high potential for birth defects and there is concern about women taking other DHT blockers for the same reason.

The best women hair loss treatment is a drug known as Minoxidil. This drug inhibits the DHT from bonding with receptors on the hair follicles and thus allows these hair roots to continue to produce keratin which is the material hair shafts are constructed of. When this drug in absorbed through the scalp it actually protects the hair follicles from attack. Minoxidil is applied topically in the morning and at night by rubbing a solution on the hair thinning area. This drug has been approved as safe for women at a 2% concentration level and for men at a 5% concentration. Many women have used the 5% mixture with good results but at this point the FDA does not recommend that.

These are the best ways to treat hair loss before the hair is completely gone and you have to deal with bald spots.
