Considerations When Purchasing LED TVs
The newest digital technology television on the market are LED TVs. In order to appreciate what you are purchasing, you need to understand the technology behind it. LED TVs are LCD TVs using LED backlighting to light the liquid crystal display unlike the LCD TVs that use fluorescent CCFL lighting. LCD TVs have a display panel positioned in front of a light. The panel has pixels which are each divided into three colors (red green and blue sub-pixels) through which light is passed through. The amount of light allowed to pass into the display determines the intensity of the color (red, green and blue).
LED TVs may not be true LED TVs since they use LEDs for lighting an LCD panel. However, LCD TVs use CCFL lighting which does not have the capacity to vary the intensity of the light going through the panel because some light seeps through the display. Some LED TVs use local dimming technology whereby individual LED’s can be switched off completely giving a true black and higher contrast ratio. In this regard, manufacturers claim that the contrast ratios can be up to 3,000,000:1 or higher. This is in relation to the LEDs that use backlighting.
Some LED TV’s may use side lighting around the edges of the display as opposed to backlighting. These however cannot provide the local dimming effect and, therefore, the contrast ratio will not be as high as the back lit LED TVs.
LED TVs should be slimmer than LCDs and plasma TVs and can be as thin as 1.2 inches which can easily facilitate wall mounting which should be compatible with your new LED.
LED TVs should be considered for their aesthetics and available connections. Accordingly, depending on the brand one may want to look at the available connections the display has and ensure that it will suit your demands keeping in mind that the number of analogue inputs is decreasing.
LED TVs are new in the market and may be more expensive than their counterparts (plasma and LCD’s) therefore you should get a television that suits your needs and more so your budget.
