Try Organic Gardening This Year
In these economic times, it is common sense to try to save whenever you can and gardening is one of those simple areas. If you consider how much organic fruits and vegetables cost these days, it is very easy to work out that you can make making significant savings for a minimal amount of output.
When considering organic vegetable gardening, the first consideration is where you will be doing your gardening. For those lucky enough to have a garden, then it is quite simple to dig over a small patch and make your fruit and vegetable area. However, all is not lost for those who live in apartments, since there is the possibility of an allotment. An allotment is a designated area of ground owned by the state who hire out the allotments for people to cultivate things in. To apply, simply contact your local authority and find out their criteria. There may be a waiting list, however, whilst waiting, you can always grow at least some flowers in a window box – in this way, you will start to cultivate your green fingers!
Having found your patch of ground, the next consideration is that of what you can actually grow. It is common sense to grow things that you normally buy and will thus save money on. Check the prices of your favorite fruits and vegetables in the supermarket and work out which ones are the most costly. From there, you will be able to decide which are the best to grow.
To get the best quality foods, you need to plant high quality seeds. Organic seeds are more expensive than regular seeds, but the results are of a higher standard too, so you need to work out your priorities. If you cant find the right type of organic seeds in your local gardening centre, then there are many online outlets which will mail order.
Obviously, along with seeds you need the right tools for the job. A spade is an essential item. Look for a spade that has a strong handle and a good connection between the metal blade and the handle itself. If you get a spade that is too cheap then the metal spade section often falls off, rendering the spade useless.
Small utensils such as trowels are also useful when organic gardening, along with other basics such as stakes for tomatoes to grown up and a gardening mat for you to kneel on- however although nice to have, these are not essential.
Organic gardening may initially seem to be something for a professional to embark on , however in reality it is a process that is simple or as hard as you make it – so go on, use your common sense – put your Wellington boots on and get out there!
