How To Use Recessed Lights In The Backyard

Adequate lighting is something that many people pass up when designing their backyard.  This is unfortunate because their yard may look great in the daytime, but as soon as the sun sets it’s a black hole like every other yard in the neighborhood.  Fortunately, there are a lot of different ways to use recessed can lights in your yard, and the rest of this post is going to offer up some tips on how to not only do it, but do it well!

The most obvious setup for recessed lighting in the backyard is on the patio roof.  In this situation, a perimeter of lights around the exposed sides of the roof will generally work out best.  This will allow light to shine out into the yard, as well as on the patio.  Adding the light onto a dimmer switch will allow you to adjust the amount of light that you need for the mood that you want set.

Another really cool thing you can do with recessed lights is mount them into the ground.  There are recessed fixtures that are designed to do this and seal tight enough to weather the worst storms.  The layout choices for these lights is almost infinite, but many people will surround the pool deck, shine them up trees, or light a pathway with them.  If you have a deck these lights are great for making a perimeter, and are fairly easy to install and wire (if you can get underneath the deck easily).

If you have any stairs or steps in your back yard, you can mount mini recessed lights into the front of the steps so that they are easily seen in the dark of night.  This is both an aesthetic and function bonus!

Using recessed lights in the backyard is such a great addition that it’s extremely surprising that more people don’t do it!  Take the ideas discussed above and work them into a plan for your own backyard.  Soon your yard will get the attention it deserves, both day and night!
