Cheap Car Seats: Frugality vs. Features

As a new parent, how many times have you had to juggle the tough choice of whether to buy the latest and greatest child product or going with a more economically feasible option?  You are definitely not alone!  No exception to this rule, car seats present a particularly daunting challenge to the dollar-conscious parent, presenting a number of affordable and expensive options with a seemingly endless array of options to trip up the unwary shopper.

When looking for cheap car seats, the best possible rule of thumb to keep in mind is that safety options should always take priority over fancy bells and whistles that do not bear directly on the well being of your child.  In other words, you should ideally be looking for seats that feature as sturdy a construction as possible along with a five point (or better) harness for securing the child firmly into place without restricting its movement to the point of discomfort.

Another thing you might want to look out for is “LATCH” compatibility in your cheap car seat.  LATCH, which stands for “Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children,” represents a huge step forward for both convenience and safety in car seats.  This system provides a number of metal or hard plastic anchors attached to the bottom and/or sides of the car seat; these anchors will latch onto corresponding hooks in your car.  Not only does this have safety advantages, but it also pays off dividends in terms of convenience for the parent in a hurry.

The bottom line is that as long as you are looking for solid construction, LATCH compatibility, and features that are generally well suited for your child’s safety, it will be hard to go wrong when shopping around for the best deal.  Even cheap car seats can provide more than enough protection as long as these things are kept in mind!
