Why Are Some Attorneys More Expensive Than Others

I’m a DUI attorney. Today I had a prospective client come into my office and talk to me about utilizing my services to help her out. We talked for a bit, I listened to her story, told her about what I could do for her, and quoted her a price. She seemed to be relatively pleased with the price I quoted her, but then she asked me a question:

“Why did some people quote me 2 and 3 times more than you did?”

I think that she expected me to have a hard time answering the question. But it was easy to answer. And I’m going to answer it for you too. And, to give you a hint, it wasn’t because I wanted her business or because I think I’m less a DUI lawyer than the other guys. But there were some definite reasons. And here they are.

First, I don’t have the name recognition or experience as the guys asking for the big bucks, so I can’t demand the same money. It doesn’t mean I’m worse, it just means I’m less proven. Here’s an example. Ten years ago or so would you have paid more to Mark McGuire or Albert Pujols? Probably McGuire. He was proven. He was good. Even though Pujols has shown to be better and had similar to better numbers even back then. Same goes for DUI attorneys and other attorneys.

Second, I don’t need to charge that high of prices. It’s not to say I wouldn’t if I could get them. But I keep my overhead low and my expenses in check on purpose so I can take a little bit less money and still provide great value. It allows me to make the same money as the guys charging more even though I’m asking for less.

Third, and finally, I try to charge based on where I think the case will go based on what I’ve been told. A few key facts about any DUI case and a decent DUI lawyer can predict what the opening offer and the eventual plea deal will be. I try to charge my fee based on where I think the case will go. Easier cases get a lower quote.

These may not be the reasons other DUI attorneys charge the fees they do. But it’s a pretty good starting point.
