Common Hurricane Shutters for Your Home

During a hurricane, the most vulnerable part of your house is your windows because they are made of glass (and your doors if you have a French door or any other kind of door made with glass). This is the reason why you should get hurricane shutters to protect not only your windows, but in effect your whole home as well from damages during a hurricane.

There are a lot of options available to a home owner in terms of types of hurricane shutters. Here are some of the most common:

1. Roll Down Shutters. For my money, the best hurricane shutter is the roll down shutters. Roll down shutters are made of metal and not cheap plastic or wood that easily rots in time when exposed to water. Although some roll down shutters are designed with small slats to allow the people inside some view of the outside, roll down shutters are generally solid and very effective in protecting your windows.

Another advantage to a roll down shutter is it can be deployed easily. It is available in both manual and electric operation. But if you choose an electric operation, you need to make sure that you have a battery that can serve as a backup source of power so that you can still deploy it even during power outages. And since the control to deploy it can be centralized, it is ideal for homes that have a second and third story.

The main disadvantage to roll down shutters is the price tag.

2. Plantation Shutters. Plantation shutters are usually installed in side your house so it does not really protect your windows. But because they are inside the house, it is easy for you to operate them even during a storm.

3. Board-n-Batten. These are exterior shutters that are made by securing solid vertical boards with horizontal battens. When opened, they add a rustic character to your home. And when closed, they provide solid protection to your windows.
