Our Top Picks In Central America For Real Estate Investing

The international real estate and overseas retirement market in Central America benefits greatly from the region’s close proximity to the US.  There are daily direct flights to the region’s capital cities from the major US hubs, and it’s even possible to travel to Central America taking an overland route.  The landscapes are beautiful, the people friendly and the real estate very affordable. In this article we pick out the top three countries for property investing in the region.

At the top of our list is Panama, located in the southernmost part of the Central America region.  The economy is emerging very strongly from the recent economic downturn buoyed by a well-respected government and massive infrastructure programs including an upgrade to the famous Panama canal.  Although some areas of Panama could be considered mature real estate locations such as the market for Panama apartments, there are also some every enticing ‘early in’ opportunities.  Places like Azuero Peninsula and the Boca Chica area close to the town of David are two places to watch.

Second on our list is Costa Rica.  The country stands for stability and good governance – two things successful real estate investor should always look out for.  The country has been on the map for decades as a tourism, retirement and second home destination and has the largest number of US expatriates in the region.  They’re attracted to places like the Central Valley close to the capital San Jose with its world class amenities, infrastructure and services.  Other investors and retirees have followed the hospitality brands to to places like Playa Flamingo Costa Rica and Playa Tamarindo and snapped up some Pacific coast bargains in this gorgeous northern province.

Belize comes in a solid third.  It’s often overlooked as a purchasing destination due to its tiny size.  (Belize has a population of just over 300,000)  But visitors tend to fall in love with the place.  First there’s the fantastic diving – Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world (after Australia).  Then there’s the classic Caribbean picture postcard setting, but with real estate on offer at far lower prices than elsewhere in the Caribbean,  And finally the rich jungles, rushing rivers and ancient Mayan ruins in the Cayo district to the west attract tourists and investors with an eco-minded mindset.

So there you have it our top picks for real estate investing in Central America.
