One of my favorite shopping items is skincare products. I love to try new products but sometimes I find them not really effective. I am quite often disappointed by the expensive products and their exaggerated descriptions. Other than feeling the products with my skin, I have discovered ways to test the quality of my skincare products. This helps me decide if I need to switch from one brand to another or stick to the same brand. I share with you 4 different simple tests. They are easily but effective in testing the quality of skincare products.
Toner is the first skincare product to apply according to proper skincare procedures after facial cleansing. From my experience, I feel itchy or stinging for some toners. The itch or sting is caused by the inappropriate PH value of the toners. Our skin’s natural PH value is PH5.5. Toners with PH5.5 to PH7 (neutral) are considered to be mild and less irritating to skin. Test the PH of your toner is extremely easy. You may get a pack of PH paper from drug stores. Dip the PH paper with some toner and wait for several seconds. Determine the PH value with reference to the color chart.
After applying toner, I usually apply a thin layer of essence to my face. These small bottles of essence are usually expensive and therefore, I expect significant effect from them. The most important attribute for effective essence is its absorbency. If it is able to penetrate deeper into my skin, the effect is better. To test if your essence can be easily absorbed by your skin, you just need some cotton pads. Piling up the cotton pads into a small stack and add a drop of essence to the stack. Wait for a while and see if your essence is able to pass through more than 3 layers of cotton pads. If yes, the essence can be considered as easily absorbed by skin.
Applying moisturizer is the final step of a simple skincare procedure. Moisture is important for keeping your skin healthy. Sometimes, I do not feel my skin moisturized but nourished. This test is the perfect test to find out if your moisturizer is nourishing or really moisturizing. Fill a glass with some water. Add a drop or a pea size of moisturizer into the water. Wait for a while. Look into the water and see whether your moisturizer sinks or float. Floating means the moisturizer is rich in oily components while sinking mean the moisturizer is rich in moisture components. Sinking one is always preferred to the floating one.
Other than toner, essence and moisturizer, sunscreen is the most often used skincare product for me. Applying suncare product is extremely important as it helps anti-aging. After applying suncare products, you may feel that your facial pores are unable to breathe. That is true and normal because most of them are quite oily. It is important to look for those that are less oily and yet able to protect you against UV light. To test this, you may apply some sunscreen on the back of your hand. After 3-5 minutes, press an oil blotting paper against it. The suncare product is too oily if there is a lot of oil absorbed.
Knowing the real quality of your skincare products is important as that is what you really (wish to) pay for. Though these tests can only be performed after you have brought the skincare products, these tests help you decide if you need to switch your existing skincare products.
