Discovering Golf In The Algarve Region – Golf Holidays Portugal Style

When it comes to idyllic golf holidays Portugal has some of the finest golf courses in the Mediterranean, many of which are on par with courses in the British Isles. This post looks the southern coast of Portugal to highlight the world class golf courses on the Algarve.

Starting in the central Algarve, many golfers choose to setup a base in Vilamoura town due to the dozens of golf resort and courses nearby. Of the resort courses the Oceanico Old Course and Victoria are two stand-out clubs. Both have classic course designs with a great mix of holes to play. The more mature Old Course has the more consistent greens which have had longer to bed in.

Of the independent courses the Pinheiros Altos and the Vila Sol are wonderful parkland courses which won’t disappoint. But it is the challenging Vale Do Lobo Royal which many golfers find the most memorable in the area. Having hosted the Portugal Open on several occasions it has been toughened over the years to bring fairway traps and rough into play. Certainly one course were you need to be long off the tee and accurate.

Western Algarve has more recently become popular for its links/links style courses. It has its fair share of championship courses (e.g. the Penina) but just as enjoyable for amateurs are the hillside courses (e.g. Parque Da Floresta & Boavista). The elevated courses make a cooler choice at the height of summer and both course sport cross-slope fairways to add difficulty to the second shot on several par 4s.

For a unique golf experience, even by Portuguese standards, the Oceanico Faldo desert style course has a great mix of holes peppered with dunes and rolling fairways that are open to the prevailing sea breezes making it a dynamic course to play year round.

In terms of having fuss-free golf holidays Portugal has worked extensively on building some world class courses along the Algarve coast along with an infrastructure (resorts, restaurants, transport routes) to make any golfing break here most memorable and care-free.

Trekking Gear for the Highlands of Nepal

Nepal is a small country that is snuggled up against the Himalayas between Tibet, now a part of China, and India. Its location makes it home to some of the highest mountains in the world including Mt Everest and Annapurna. It is also one of the world’s friendliest coiuntries, with a population that is keen to share the natural beauty of their country with foreigners. That makes it a great destination for trekking and it is Nepal that has made famous the idea of Tea-Room trekking.

In Tea-room trekking visitors hike from one village to another and stay in small guest houses, called tea rooms. The accommodation is usually quite Spartan. It is unusual, for instance, to find running hot water in most places (and where there is running hot water check how they heat it – there are some solar heaters about but oftentimes they chop down scarce trees to get wood so that foreigners can have hot showers). The great adcantages of this form of hiking though is that you don’t need to carry nearly as much gear and you also get to experience something of the local life and food. I don’t recommend eating yak steak or drinking yak milk. Even yak butter tastes pretty rancid, but the lentil soup and garlic soup that Nepal is famous for is well worth having. There are a couple of things that you really need to have with you to enjoy the journey. The paths are often really rough with steep ascents and descents so a good pair of hiking boots is quite important. There is also no electricity in most of the small villages and tea rooms, so a head torch will make life a lot easier, especially when you have to find your way to a primitive “long-drop” toilet in the middle of the night.

Be sure to also take plenty of hand sanitizer and wash your hands all the time to help avoid getting tummy troubles.

Crushed Ice Race Extreme Skating

“WOW” is all I can say about the new extreme sport called “Crashed Ice skating”.  This sport is not for the faint of heart.  If you’ve got the guts to put on your ice skates and enter this race your are a brave person!  This is essentially down hill ice skating with lots of twists and turns.  The Red Bull energy drink company sponsors various races around the world.  The next one at the writing of this article is in March 2010 and will attract a record crowd of well over 40,000 people in Quebec City Canada.  The first official race was held in Stockholm Sweden and won by a fellow named Jasper Felder.

The next race is set up in urban Quebec City with a length approximately 565 meters and it’s a downhill nightmare on a five meter wide track, with vertical drops of 60 meters with the steepest drop of 40 degrees, it’s very precarious, with eight curves and six jump hills, as skaters reach mind boggling speeds.  The building of this course took 34 days and 250 workers to complete it. Competitors slap on their ice skates and line up four to each heat, like race horses in the gates.  They take off when the gates open and battle it out to see who can win their heat.  Usually the competitors are outfitted with hockey skates and gear for protection as they bang into each other the bodies pile up, and chaos ensues in the crowd.  As the heats progress the competition gets fiercer and fiercer with even more body contact.  The top two guys from each heat move on.  This is an awesome competition, like something you’ve never seen before!  The intensity is just unbelievable as the crowd goes crazy!  Each year this sport is growing by leaps and bounds literally!   There are both a men’s and women’s division where one person will be crowned “The Crushed Ice Champion of the World”!

Competitors from around the world are vying for the chance to participate, with over 12,000 Canadians applying for a chance to race.  Red Bull had to hold a lottery there we so many people applying, as well as hold 11 qualifying races.  The number was whittled down to 76 Canadians representing Canada from cities such as Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Montreal, Quebec City, and Halifax in the mix

Do a quick search on YouTube and you’ll see some of the previous years races and you’ll be hooked!

However, whatever the sport, there are a number of things that men athletes have to take into account any time they are buying a sport watch. To begin with, you need to consider the features. Depending on the nature of your sport, you need to get a watch that will suit your needs. For example, if you were a runner, especially the long distance races such as marathons, then it would be better if you got a watch that has got a heart rate monitor or even one that uses the GPS system to know where you are and avoid getting lost instead of getting a water resistance watch. Make sure that the watch is solid enough to withstand the extreme conditions of your sport.

In order to get such a watch that withstands tough conditions, you will need to have a clear idea of what you are looking for in a watch. What Are Good Golf Clubs and How Much Should I Expect Them to Cost?

golf-clubsGolf clubs are a big investment and most people want them to last a long time. Multiple retailers sell golf clubs, but usually the best place is to visit a sport store (e.g. Dicks). Good golf clubs usually have a steel or wooden head that won’t crack or come loose when a ball is hit off the tee.

Good Golf Clubs are those that come from manufacturers who have a reliable and long history. Don’t buy one from a manufacturer that has been out for only 30 years, rather one that has been out for close to 80 years at the minimum. Make sure to do your homework too when looking for a good golf club. This can include going to the manufacturer’s website and reading up on them. Another quality of a good golf club is to make sure that the shaft applied to the club is not too strong. The problems with clubs with shafts that are too strong are that they lack flexibility.

Those with shallow face metal woods are top of the line. They come from manufacturers proven to be great by many such as Pinemeadow Golf for example. Your length will also greatly apply when it comes to picking out the right type of club. A good type of metal also matters, such as Titanium and Maraging Steel. They hold on tight, which would prevent damage when you hit the ball. Make sure what you should always consider are recommendations from people you know, they’re the best source.

To help you out with your search, here is a list of manufacturers that many people are using: Callaway, Ping, Titliest, TaylorMade, and Cobra other than the manufacturer I already mentioned in the previous paragraph. Now comes the biggie out of them all, the price. Many manufacturers, especially the popular ones and those used by professionals, easily hit the one-thousand mark. Well, unless you go somewhere not exactly promising, such as Wal-Mart, you can honestly expect the price to be, at the minimum, six-hundred bucks. The explanation for this is the precision of the drivers and wedges.

Being a bargain hunter myself, I suggest you try eBay or Amazon.com. Though they may be used, you can get a great price on them and most of them have been well taken care of. Ask any questions if you feel you have to and check the seller’s feedback. Also, if you’re shopping at either of those stores, especially if you’re looking at a used golf club, enlarge the pictures to point out any dents, scratches, or cracks. Also read the description to make sure it’s exactly what you’re looking for.
