Discovering Golf In The Algarve Region – Golf Holidays Portugal Style
When it comes to idyllic golf holidays Portugal has some of the finest golf courses in the Mediterranean, many of which are on par with courses in the British Isles. This post looks the southern coast of Portugal to highlight the world class golf courses on the Algarve.
Starting in the central Algarve, many golfers choose to setup a base in Vilamoura town due to the dozens of golf resort and courses nearby. Of the resort courses the Oceanico Old Course and Victoria are two stand-out clubs. Both have classic course designs with a great mix of holes to play. The more mature Old Course has the more consistent greens which have had longer to bed in.
Of the independent courses the Pinheiros Altos and the Vila Sol are wonderful parkland courses which won’t disappoint. But it is the challenging Vale Do Lobo Royal which many golfers find the most memorable in the area. Western Algarve has more recently become popular for its links/links style courses. It has its fair share of championship courses (e.g. the Penina) but just as enjoyable for amateurs are the hillside courses (e.g. Parque Da Floresta & Boavista). The elevated courses make a cooler choice at the height of summer and both course sport cross-slope fairways to add difficulty to the second shot on several par 4s.
For a unique golf experience, even by Portuguese standards, the Oceanico Faldo desert style course has a great mix of holes peppered with dunes and rolling fairways that are open to the prevailing sea breezes making it a dynamic course to play year round.
In terms of having fuss-free golf holidays Portugal has worked extensively on building some world class courses along the Algarve coast along with an infrastructure (resorts, restaurants, transport routes) to make any golfing break here most memorable and care-free.

Golf clubs are a big investment and most people want them to last a long time. Multiple retailers sell golf clubs, but usually the best place is to visit a sport store (e.g. Dicks). Good golf clubs usually have a steel or wooden head that won’t crack or come loose when a ball is hit off the tee.
