Conventional wheelchair vs. mobility scooters
Use of wheelchair or similar structures has been common for as long as human existence can be traced. The ideology of design may differ according to origin but the distinctive marker is the use in moving persons.
In the early millennium years, royals used a similar carriage that resembled a bed pulled by men or slaves. Much further, its use miniaturization reduced its weight for use as a medical prescription for the elderly. Consequently, its popularity increased as it found a key role to play in the crippled and unwell patients.
These olden customizations of wheel chairs needed supervision and constant help from a helpful assistant. As the world continued to expand its advances in technology, the need for independence became a reality in the world of wheeled chairs.
This was through the introduction of mobility scooters. Their use became widely appreciated because of their modifications that could allow the user to drive them.
The use of these newly developed ‘walk companions’ expanded the possibilities into in-depth studies to improve the current models. Luckily during this period, the use of electric powered mobility scooters was invented. The significance did not only relieve the handicapped but it also gave them power to make their own movement decisions.
The elderly and the invalid found new legs which allowed a spectrum of activities that could not have been done previously.
The innovative idea also brought respite to the family and friends who had the task of attending to the invalid. Especially, in the partially handicapped, the mobility scooter became a savior since it greatly reduced their reliance on secondary help to move about. The conventional wheel chairs have not been totally outfaced but if the current trends continue, it will be a common scene to see mobility scooters just as you see cars everyday.
